The K9 Intelligence Unit™

A performance based counterterrorism K9 education, testing and certification organization.

Dogs in training.

Primary mission: to bring into utilization, highly trained and certified K9 teams in the fight against the many aspects of terrorism. The Unit will work to develop and improve training methods, tactics, standards, techniques and procedures in use with K9 teams throughout the world.

The tragic events of September 11th 2001, brought terrorism to our shores in a way never seen before. Unfortunately, up until that day, we did not have K9 teams specifically trained to address terrorism or mass disaster. As the world watched the tragedy unfold on their television sets, they became acutely aware of the value of professional and volunteer K9 teams trained to search for victims of the devastation.

The problem: Then as now, there are many outstanding search and rescue (SAR) organizations who dedicate countless hours to help locate victims of earthquake, floods, tornado, hurricane, kidnapping etc. Few if any of these teams were specifically trained to address public need in a terrorism environment, where they themselves could become victims of primary or secondary terrorist attacks if not properly trained. There are many people in the homeland defense or terrorism industry who believe they are counter terrorism K9 experts. However a national standard had not yet been established to separate those who have useful knowledge, skills and training from those who do not. Motivation to work as a collective group operating from within the same standard was lacking. Even things as simple as terminology differences resulted in confusion, misunderstandings, increased time spent on searches etc, all resulted in substandard performance in actual operations.

.

The Answer: was to acknowledge true counter terrorism K9 experts by establishing a minimum standard of knowledge and skill, to recognize those professionals who meet that standard, to promote and recognize quality training programs which offer more than sporting, canned, or sub-standard methodologies. To further bring unity to existing K9 professionals working in counter terrorism fields was also a must. To create, promote and maintain programs which are designed specifically to address the needs of K9 professionals and volunteers who work in the counter terror and mass disaster field. To put into place education and training programs that work to keep our professionals safe in the field while being of better service to the community.

Working toward that objective we took our knowledge and years of experience, along with the feedback from a host of other recognized counter terrorism professionals, law enforcement, military, SAR organizations and developed The K9 Intelligence Unit's programs that are in place today. Education, Testing and Certification are offered by The K9 Intelligence Unit on two foundational levels. Our "Certified Anti-Terrorism Specialist Canine"(CASC), and “Counter Terrorism K9 Technician" (CTKT). But the true flagship of what The K9 Intelligence Unit is all about is our  elite "Canine Counter Terrorism Specialist" (CCTS)  designation.  All are recognized by The Anti-Terrorism Accreditation Board. See "Certifications" from the menu at the left or the Security Academy menu at the top for a list of educational offerings or contact The K9 Intelligence Unit.

Our Divisions Structure:
The K9 Intelligence Unit is organized in the following divisional sections.

Security Academy : This is the training & education division. Knowledge is passed on to members by online webinars, printed material, DVD & CD, classes, workshops, seminars and one on one instruction. Our training is both class instruction and hands on for optimum benefit which includes experience for both dog and handler. All of our instructors are experienced and recognized K9 counter terrorism professionals, most are current or past P.O.S.T. certified instructors. A current list of Security Academy offerings can be found here.

Testing and Certification: This is its own division for two primary reasons. The first reason is because our overall primary objective is not in education, training, promoting a specific dog breed or contract work. Our primary objective is simply to establish and maintain a certification standard for counter terrorism K9 teams. Secondary to that testing and certification does not depend on a K9 team receiving their education and/or training through The K9 Intelligence Unit. There are many good training programs in the world who have met the high standards maintained by The K9 Intelligence Unit that should be recognized for the elite programs they offer and the K9 teams they graduate. Providing access to our testing and certification programs to all K9 teams regardless of breed, training, education, gender, background, location, national origin etc. is the only truly fair way to maintain the certification programs we provide.

Special Operations: This division deploys our K9 teams in real world scenarios. As part of any elite counter terrorism group, there exists a need for highly trained service dogs in the fields of explosives detection, cadaver location, human cargo detection, narcotics detection, evidence location, protective services and search and recovery.Providing access to elite K9 teams that can be on site on short notice is not only a goal but a reality we work to provide and maintain. This division is also home to our research and investigation department.

Support Services: We depend a great deal on our support services division for everyday needs as well as other support and logistic needs. They have to anticipate our every need before a deployment, then they must supply an answer to our needs while we are on scene. When a team is deployed, support services help to get the teams to and from hot spots. The support services division works to make arrangements for transport, lodging, health care for both dog and handler if needed, gear and supplies, nutritional needs, re-supply and evacuation if needed just to name a few. This division includes the research and investigation arm where our intelligence people work to keep us informed and up to date on happenings.

Command: This division of course is where administration, command and control are maintained. This division oversees daily and long range objectives. It also administers the deployments and mission activities. The Command structure of The K9 Intelligence Unit is a quasi paramilitary type system. We have found that this system works best for our organization and helps to instill confidence in our clients, our teams and the community.
